how do I pack fragile items for a house move

To pack fragile items for a house move, wrap each piece individually in several layers of packing paper or bubble wrap, place them upright in sturdy double-walled boxes lined with cushioning material, and clearly label every box 'FRAGILE – THIS WAY UP' on at least two sides.

The single biggest cause of breakages during a house move is poor packing rather than rough handling. Using the correct box size, adequate cushioning and proper labelling makes a significant difference. Small or medium double-walled boxes are ideal for fragile loads — they keep weight manageable and give the box walls enough rigidity to protect the contents.

Wrap every item individually before it goes near a box. A single sheet of packing paper works for robust crockery, but delicate glassware, ornaments and antiques benefit from paper followed by bubble wrap. Pay particular attention to handles, spouts and rims, which are the most vulnerable points. Avoid the temptation to pad out a box with clothing alone — fabric offers very little resistance to impact compared with purpose-made packing materials.

  • Plates and large flat items: pack on their edges, not flat — this dramatically reduces the pressure placed on them during transit.
  • Glasses and stemware: wrap individually, stand upright, and do not stack a second layer directly on top without a firm cardboard divider.
  • Mirrors and framed pictures: wrap in packing paper, tape a protective cross of cardboard over the glass face, then use bubble wrap. Transport vertically whenever possible.
  • Electrical items with screens: use the original packaging where available; if not, wrap in anti-static bubble wrap and mark the box with the contents.

Once a box is packed, shake it gently. If you can hear or feel movement, add more cushioning material. The contents should feel snug but not compressed. Write 'FRAGILE – THIS WAY UP' on at least two sides and the top, and note the destination room. Astra Removals crews are trained to identify and prioritise labelled fragile boxes, loading them last so they travel in the safest position within the vehicle.

If you would rather not pack fragile items yourself, Astra Removals offers a professional packing service for customers throughout Bournemouth and the wider Dorset area. Our teams use specialist materials and have many years of experience protecting everything from everyday crockery to valuable antiques and fine art.

Step by step

  1. Gather the right materials - Use double-walled cardboard boxes in small or medium sizes — large boxes become too heavy and risk the base giving way. Stock up on acid-free packing paper, bubble wrap, foam pouches, packing peanuts or crumpled newspaper, and strong packing tape at least 50 mm wide.
  2. Prepare the box - Seal the base of the box with two or three strips of tape running across the join and up the sides. Add at least 5–7 cm of scrunched packing paper or packing peanuts as a cushioned base layer before placing any items inside.
  3. Wrap each item individually - Place the item in the centre of a large sheet of packing paper, fold the corners over first, then roll it up. For anything particularly delicate — wine glasses, ceramics, mirrors — follow the paper wrap with a layer of bubble wrap and secure it with tape. Never wrap two items together without separating them first.
  4. Pack items correctly into the box - Stand plates and bowls on their edges (vertical packing significantly reduces the chance of breakage). Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter, more delicate pieces on top. Nest wrapped glasses inside one another only if each is fully wrapped. Fill every gap with scrunched paper so nothing can shift in transit.
  5. Seal and label the box - Add a final 5 cm cushioning layer of paper on top before sealing. Tape the lid securely, then write 'FRAGILE – THIS WAY UP' in large letters on at least two sides and the top. List the room destination as well so removal crews handle and stack it correctly from the moment it leaves your home.

Related questions

What is the best box size for fragile items?

Small or medium double-walled cardboard boxes are best. Large boxes become too heavy when filled with crockery or glassware, which increases the risk of the base failing or the box being dropped.

Can I use newspaper instead of packing paper for fragile items?

Newspaper can be used as void fill, but avoid wrapping items directly in it — the ink transfers onto surfaces and can be difficult to clean, particularly from porous ceramics or light-coloured porcelain. Plain packing paper is preferable for direct contact.

Should I tell my removal company which boxes contain fragile items?

Yes, always. As well as labelling boxes clearly, point out fragile boxes to your removal crew at the start of the job. A reputable company such as Astra Removals will load them last and position them where they are least likely to be disturbed during the journey.

Is it worth using a professional packing service for fragile or valuable items?

For high-value, sentimental or particularly fragile items it is often worth the additional cost. Professional packers use specialist materials, pack efficiently, and their work may strengthen any insurance claim should damage occur despite all reasonable precautions.
